Praxis Gathering '16: Shaping Disciples for Movement: David Fitch

Discipleship is a lost love in our culture of “Go Big or Go Home.”
At Praxis Gathering 2016, however, we will gather to recover the act and art of discipleship. This unique, annual church planting experience combines real-time practice with rich theology and deep reflection. Participants of all backgrounds, denominations and ecclesial styles will join together to plummet deep into the hands-on work of shaping disciples in their neighborhoods and networks. Join the V3 Movement, leading missiologists and hundreds of passionate practitioners like yourself this September to be equipped, nourished and renewed for a life of intentional, place-based discipleship.

Meet David Fitch

A prerequisite for every Praxis presenter is a life that accompanies the instruction and insights she or he shares with us. Great communicators are in abundance, but the best practices and tools come from the bumps and bruises of working them out at the street level.
[Tweet “Best missional practices come from the bumps & bruises of working them out at the street level”] David Fitch has been faithfully fleshing out a life of discipleship for many years, and we are honored to welcome David back to the Praxis Gathering. David’s life and teachings have had a profound influence on us here at V3, and his ability to break down theology to quotidian life makes him an apt fit for Praxis ’16. For what is discipleship if not the daily marriage between the life of Christ and our daily relationships and experiences that often pass as banal? David has the gift of showing us the mystery of the mundanity of discipleship tied to the rich history of the Church.
David holds the B. R. Lindner Chair of Evangelical Theology at Northern Seminary in Chicago and is the founding pastor of Life on the Vine Christian Community. In 2014, he, his wife Rae Ann, and their son Max moved to Westmont, Illinois, to join with a Life on the Vine church plant, Peace of Christ Church, where he serves as a pastor and coaches church planting through numerous venues.
David is an expert in the fields of missiology, cultural engagement, leadership and theology, and he has lectured and presented on these subjects at numerous seminaries, graduate schools, denominational gatherings and conferences.

The Blogger

One good way to get to know David before meeting him at Praxis 2016 is through his excellent blog. At reclaimingthemission.com David writes about reflections from his life and work as a pastor, missional community coach, and professor of theology and culture at Northern Seminary. Of the blog itself David writes, “The posts are always meant to be practical. Many times however the posts engage a more explicitly theological issue I believe is important to understand for leading and being the church in the new post Christendom worlds of N. America.” You can also follow his thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.

The Author

In addition to his blog and social media literature, David Fitch has authored several books and written articles for Christianity Today, The Other Journal, Missiology and various academic journals.
David is the author of The End of Evangelicalism? Discerning a New Faithfulness for Mission (Cascade Books, 2011), The Great Giveaway: Reclaiming the Mission of the Church from American Business, Parachurch Organizations, Psychotherapy, Consumer Capitalism and Other Modern Maladies (Baker Books, 2005), and mostly recently Prodigal Christianity: 10 Signposts into the Missional Frontier (Jossey-Bass, 2013) with co-author Geoff Holsclaw. His forthcoming book, Faithful Presence: How God Shapes the Church for the Sake of the World (InterVarsity Press), is slated for publication this year. Our recommendation is to read as much David Fitch as you possibly can. Doing so will help your mission and ground your theology.
Our other recommendation…personally meet David at Praxis.
