The Well: A Testimonial

This is a story from our Learning Cohorts about a church planter named Dan Magan and his church, The Well, in Virginia. The Well is a new church plant in rural Central VA. Nelson County is 435 square miles and is home to only 15,800 people. With 36 people per square mile, it can be a pretty scattered church.

Our desire is to form healthy and lasting relationships with our neighbors and ‘do church a little differently.’ Our group meets every Thursday at 6:30p for word, dinner and prayer. Our people are discipled to be disciple makers and our desire is to see the lost come to a saving knowledge of Christ.

[Tweet “Our desire is to form healthy and lasting relationships.”] Pastor Dan and his wife, Kelli have 12 years of ministry experience as both a youth pastor and a staff and preaching pastor at their sending church, Portico Church in Charlottesville, VA. Dan spent 20 years serving our country in both the Navy and Army and has 5 children ranging in age from 23yrs to 3yrs.

A Few Questions for Dan:

Tell us a little about yourself, especially your hobbies and interests.

I enjoy anything outdoors. I’m an avid outdoorsman: hunting, fishing, hiking, camping—you name it. I spent 20 years in the Navy and Army (3 years Navy; 17 Army) and have been in ministry for 10-11 years. Our plant is in Lovingston, Virginia.

Tell us more about the Well of Nelson.

We are in an extremely rural area with less than 40 people per square mile, and many of the families in this area have been destroyed by meth addiction, which is a large part of our focus. Through my sending church, I heard great things about V3, and that’s why I joined the V3 Learning Cohort.

What has been your favorite moment of the cohort thus far? How has it affected your ministry?

Praxis is always good, but my coach, Mike Pumphrey has been an awesome friend and supporter to me in my ministry. I come from a tribe of reformed dudes who are all very smart and love Jesus, but they rarely step out of the circle. It has been refreshing to be with people who may disagree with me theologically but still have a commonality with me, which is the passion to reach the lost and see Jesus glorified. The practicum and fellowship with other innovative thinkers has been awesome.

What excites you about the future in regard to your plant and the V3 Tribe?

I think every church planter should do at least year one. Its like drinking out of a fire hose sometimes, and it challenges our traditional mindsets. I am looking forward to continuing my participation and assistance with V3.
