It has become daily news to see leaders abuse their power or observe their character crumble. In the last few decades we’ve baptized business practices and hierarchical structures—it has ravaged the soul of the Church. We need another way forward. At Praxis Gathering 2018, our fourth annual time together, we will plummet deep into the hands-on-work of Re-Imagining Leadership with unique emphasis on mutual leadership, emotional healthy leadership, five-fold intelligence, multicultural leadership and leadership in the neighborhood. We are overjoyed to welcome Dr. A.J. Swoboda to speak in our public gathering as well as present two workshops. He is among some of the best on-the-ground church planters and practitioners who will awaken us to the possibilities for lighting a path ahead for soul-healthy leadership in our churches.
Meet A.J. Swoboda
Dr. A. J. Swoboda is a professor, author, and pastor of Theophilus in urban Portland, Oregon. He is the lead mentor of a Doctor of Ministry program on the Holy Spirit and Leadership at Fuller Seminary, and teaches theology, biblical studies, and Christian history at a number of other universities and Bible colleges. He is the director of Blessed Earth Northwest, an organization focused on creation care issues and Sabbath in the Pacific Northwest. A.J. is the author of Subversive Sabbath (Brazos Press), The Dusty Ones (Baker), Tongues and Trees: Toward a Pentecostal Ecological Theology (JPTSup, Deo), and Introducing Evangelical Ecotheology (Baker Academic).
A.J. will be presenting these important workshops in Philadelphia this year:
Sabbath Rhythms for Lifelong Ministry
In this workshop A.J. Swoboda will explore the biblical foundations of Sabbath, and the far-reaching implications rest has on our minds, bodies, families, and ministry. Attention will then be turned to particular challenges that those in pastoral ministry face, and how Sabbath as part of a weekly rhythm is key to sustainable long-term ministry.
Dark Night of the Leadership Soul
In this workshop A.J. will explore how all leaders in the church will experience great pain and hardship. A.J. Swoboda will teach on how hardship, whether it be resentment, heartbreak, loss, depression, or desperation, may draw us closer to the hope that is found in Christ.
